Grand Presentation of International Media Arts
at ORDE BARU OK. Video – Indonesia Media Arts Festival 2015
JAKARTA – International-scale media arts festival, OK. Video, is back. This is the seventh festival organized biannually since it was first held in 2003. ORDE BARU OK. Video – Indonesia Media Arts Festival 2015 is held on 15 – 28 June 2015 and supported by the Galeri Nasional Indonesia which also becomes the festival’s main venue.
Mahardika Yudha, the Artistic Director of OK. Video, this year is also doubling as the curator of the exhibition after previously serving as the curator of OK. Video Flesh – 5th Jakarta International Video 2011 for the sub-theme of Surveillance & Self Potrait with Rizki Lazuardi.
Works by 73 artists from 21 countries, including South Africa, US, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Indonesia, UK, Japan, Germany, Canada, Colombia, South Korea, Norway, Pakistan, The Philippines, France, Russia, Venezuela, Vietnam, will be exhibited in this year’s festival. Among them are 12 selected works from Open Submission. Three best selected works will be announced during the event’s opening.
This year OK. Video takes the theme “Orde Baru” (New Order) as the festival’s axis. How (analog) media technology politics controlled and used by the authoritarian regime (the state) in building public perception and resolving problems, as well as (digital) media technology politics controlled by the public after the end of the Cold War or the fall of authoritarian regimes which marked the rise of democracy are two subjects that are being confronted through this theme. By reading these two, it is hoped that a new perspective can be arise to take another look at history and public perception myths created by the authoritarian regime that persist to this day.
“In recent years it is as if we are being faced with a situation of the past (history) and that today’s life is proceeding as if within one time. This also goes for the new perspectives revealed from these histories,” explains Mahardika Yudha. “The many historical archives that were kept in the past have now been released and are accessible, enabling the world community to create a new understanding. The presence of internet media technology succeeded in cutting geographic and temporal boundaries creating this situation.”
This year, OK. Video is also developing itself institutionally and decided to establish itself as Indonesia Media Arts Festival, from previously being Jakarta International Video Festival. This shift paves the way for OK. Video to expand its artistic reach by not only presenting temporally-based works (video, film, and performance) and installations or multi-channel, but also sound art, digital imaging, internet-based art, and other possibilities from works based on media technology that has the opportunity to present new artistic ideas and critical issues without bounds with respect to the new themes being advanced.
The festival will be opened on Sunday, 14 June 2015, at 16.00 – 22.00 at Galeri Nasional Indonesia and will be celebrated with multimedia performances by bequiet, Brisik, AstoneA, and Racun Kota, and also special performance by ruangrupa. Aside from exhibitions, the public program series of ORDE BARU OK. Video – Indonesia Media Arts Festival 2015 includes multimedia performances, symposium, workshops, and discussion. This year, OK. Video invites Riksa Afiaty to curate Open Lab, a media art collaboration laboratory involving four art collectives lifepatch, WAFT Lab, MakeDoNia, and Digital Nativ, and Aditya `Gooodit` Fachrizal Hafiz as the the curator of Young Urban People Digital Expression, an interactive digital exhibition.

Brief History of OK. Video Festival
OK. Video Festival is an international video arts festival held every two years since 2003 by ruangrupa, a contemporary arts organization established in 2000 by a group of artists in Jakarta. OK. Video Festival brings specific themes to discuss social and cultural phenomena happening in Indonesia and the world.
OK. Video 2003 presented the latest works of international video artists. In the second event (2005), OK. Video took the theme Sub-Version. Aside from presenting video works, OK. Video Militia (2007) also held video workshops in 12 cities in Indonesia and screenings in a number of public spaces in Jakarta. In 2009, OK. Video celebrated social, cultural, and political issues with humor through the theme Comedy. OK. Video Flesh (2011) presented works under four sub-themes, Face-Dominated, (in)corporeal, Digital Viral, and Private- Public. In 2013, OK. Video took the theme Muslihat (Trickery, Deception) trying to raise the issue of how to utilize media technology that has limitations due to political interventions to the history of discovery, knowledge, and the corporate industrial power.
Since 2003, OK. Video collaborated with Galeri Nasional Indonesia that has become the main venue for this festival. For the current event, Galeri Nasional Indonesia is again bearing witness to how OK. Video is developing itself to become Indonesia Media Arts Festival.
