Curator: LIN Ying Artists from different eras and regions have often worked with the natural sceneries from their local surroundings, basing on impressions and concepts derived from their observations of the natural environment. “The Magic of Nature” is an educational exhibition with Taiwanese artists working with subject matters that describe the land that they have grown up in, presenting various concerns from different generations for our natural environment. With the use of new media technologies, it is anticipated for the audience to experience the artists’ observations and perspectives on nature through the interactive learning opportunities provided, calling upon people to reflect and care about the environment. The curatorial core of the exhibition is based on depictions of natural sceneries derived from the artists’ concerns for the land and awareness for the environment, using multifaceted perspectives to guide the audience. The overarching theme of the exhibition is comprised of the following three subcategories: “Spectacular Brushstrokes - Homage to Nature”, which presents breathtaking nature sceneries keenly and creatively captured by the artists; “Collapsing Land – Revelation”, which guides the audience in a joint reflection on the conditions of today’s environmental destructions; and “Seeing All Things - Fantasy World”, which seeks to use interactive displays to awake people’s mindfulness for our natural ecology. The presentations on view in the exhibition are further arranged into five interactive sections based on the three subcategories. Each section comprised of various interactive new media with digitized paintings, allowing the audience to experience a shifting scenario that takes them through the phases of natural wonder, destruction, and a hopeful future, with art used to provide aesthetical experiences to fortify people’s sensibilities for nature. Interpretations created with new media are applied in “The Magic of Nature”, seeking to form connections with the new generation. Through arrangements that bring together senses of stillness and movements, a scenario-based dynamism is formed with the exhibition approach. Furthermore, through interactive dialogues formed with intangible and tangible elements, the audience’s perceptions are stimulated, encouraging their willingness to learn through self-exploration. The exhibition offers an educational and also entertaining experience to children and people of all ages, seeking to achieve the objective of aesthetic education by learning while playing and vice versa, with nature’s beauty fully experienced throughout the process.
