Beyond Representation — An Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art May 17 — 27, 2012 10am — 6pm 30/F Bank of China Tower, 1 Garden Road, Hong Kong The strength of the Chinese economy continues to exceed expectations amidst current global financial crisis and this growth has drawn the attention of the world to explore the country beyond its economic affairs into its art and culture. In recent years, we have repeatedly witnessed auction record prices for classical and contemporary Chinese paintings and calligraphy, which is not only a result of the booming economy but also an awareness of cultural and national confidence. Classical and modern Chinese paintings are highly sought after by collectors but there is also an emerging demand for contemporary artworks created through incorporating traditional Chinese ink paintings or art philosophy. Different from the conventional Chinese ink paintings, the new branch of contemporary Chinese art evolved from reexamining and reinterpreting the traditional materials, techniques and concepts. Tiancheng International envisions to reveal the charm of the Eastern art to international collectors and to open up a new path for the Chinese art market. Along with this year being the "year of ink paintings", scholars, art critics and art enthusiasts are determined to uncover new elements in the traditional Chinese paintings and to bring a new perspective on understanding the Chinese culture. To echo the increasing interests in contemporary Chinese art and culture, Tiancheng International is holding a special art exhibition "Beyond Representation", where we will present over 60 iconic works from 44 established and up-and-coming artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. These works illustrate how artistic concepts are depicted and expressed by these contemporary literati, and also provide a peek into the future development of the contemporary Chinese art, which Tiancheng hopes to participate in building. We anticipate the exhibition to offer a different perspective to contemporary Chinese art and to rekindle our viewers’ appreciation for a spiritual art experience.
